Adaptable Rigging
For all wind circumstances and directions, HReko has only three sails which can remain rigged in furls. No sails need to be removed or stowed under deck.
The unique head sail of HReko (a double layer Code Zero) can open into a two sheet configuration allowing a 100% increase of sail area. By inclining the mast forward by 10° with a moderately bending forestay this sail can achieve a spinnaker sails’ efficiency giving about 80 sq. meters of filled sail area. Such a spinnaker like sail, rigged for operation from the cockpit, provides more safety and comfort for a smaller crew or single sailor.
When running the foresails are fully unrolled and held in a “butterfly” position by two telescopic whisker poles. The specially designed convertible headsail, cut between the Genoa and Code Zero sails consists of two layers fixed along the center seem to an anti-twist structural stay. This modified flying sail furler replaces the conventional hollow forestay extrusion and is designed to accomplish the 10° bending when required for running downwind. Fully deployed, the head sail resembles a “low aspect spinnaker” except for the fact that it is fixed at four points along with the luff extrusion. The design forms an efficient and sophisticated type of two-jib butterfly ocean sail. On a side reaches, the sail functions like a normal jib sail of about 40 sq. meters, but in fact is two sheets of sail layered together.
Another distinguishing feature is the adjustable traverse bipod mast. Positioned after the middle of the boat to improve downwind sailing, it is part of the adaptable rigging concept that also includes a bendable forestay on a transverse track on the bow. The lower hinge secures the mast when it is forward inclined. It also allows the mast to be lowered and raised again within minutes when passing under a bridge or making repairs even on rough seas.
The full batten mainsail is furled in the boom and not used during running. With the mast in a normal position the rig functions like any conventional furl system. Shifting the head stay insertion along a 2 meter wide transverse track on the bow allows adjustment of the angle of wind incidence on the head sail of up to 18 degrees without changing of boat direction. When sailing close hauled during stronger wind, the main sail is used in combination with a self-tacking jib (high aspect stay sail). It is fixed to a furling system.
Irrespective of any sailors abilities (see polar diagram), the philosophy and manner of sailing the HReko is influenced by the integrated serial hybrid propulsion system that includes strong electric pod motor-generators and great solar panel capacity. While sailing, the propellers of the HReko should always run, passive or active, using or generating electric energy. In light wind conditions sailing upwind or broad reach, the electric motors can increase boat speed considerably while using very little energy. In ideal sun conditions, the electric propulsion energy can come from 9 sq. meters of solar panels without using onboard batteries. Under strong and favorable sailing conditions, the pods can generate electricity to replenish the batteries.
